When AI Gets Tricked: Here’s What New ChatGPT Vulnerabilities Teach Us about Staying Safe Online.

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday life. Kids use it to research school projects, parents rely on it for budgeting and planning, and professionals turn to it for quick answers during work. It feels almost magical at times, but even the smartest technology can make mistakes. The latest discovery from cybersecurity researchers is a reminder that AI, just like every other tool we use, has vulnerabilities we need to understand.

A team at Tenable recently found seven new weaknesses in OpenAI’s ChatGPT models, including GPT-4o and the newer GPT-5. These were not small bugs that barely matter. They were loopholes that allowed attackers to trick ChatGPT into revealing personal information from a user’s chat history or even from memory. The most unsettling part is that these actions could happen without the user knowing anything was wrong.

To understand this better, imagine ChatGPT as a very intelligent helper that listens to you, learns from your instructions, and remembers certain things to make future conversations smoother. Now imagine someone whispering secret instructions behind your back, instructions your helper accidentally obeys because it cannot tell the difference between your voice and theirs. This is essentially what these vulnerabilities make possible. Attackers can hide harmful instructions inside websites, links, or even inside simple search queries. When ChatGPT interacts with that information, it may reveal private details, save harmful instructions into memory, behave unpredictably in future conversations, or respond in ways the attacker wants. All of this can happen without you clicking suspicious links or typing anything unusual.

The researchers highlighted several techniques used in these attacks. One involves placing malicious commands inside parts of a website that are not visible at first glance, like comment sections. If you ask ChatGPT to summarize the website, it reads everything, including the hidden instructions, and follows them. Another attack works even if you do not click anything at all. Simply asking about a website can cause ChatGPT to execute hidden commands because that site may already have been indexed by Bing or OpenAI’s crawler. Other attacks rely on special one-click links that immediately run harmful instructions when opened. Some attacks even disguise malicious URLs inside links that appear to come from trusted websites, which makes it easier for someone to click without thinking twice. One of the most worrying risks is memory poisoning, where hidden instructions get stored inside your AI’s memory, causing it to behave strangely much later without any obvious cause.

These issues matter because artificial intelligence is no longer a niche tool used by tech experts. It is part of family life, school routines, and professional environments. Parents rely on AI for emails and planning. Kids use it for homework and creativity. Professionals depend on it for research and productivity. When AI systems can be tricked this easily, it affects everyone, and it means we must be more thoughtful about how we use these tools. This is not about fear. It is about awareness.

There are simple ways for families and professionals to stay safe. Avoid sharing sensitive information with AI tools. Never type home addresses, school names, passwords, or private family details into a chatbot. Be cautious with links. If something feels off or unfamiliar, do not open it. Teach children that AI is not a diary. It can forget, misunderstand, or, as this research showed, be manipulated. Use AI for learning and creativity rather than private matters. Most importantly, stay informed. Digital risks evolve quickly and understanding them is becoming a basic life skill.

OpenAI has already fixed some of the reported vulnerabilities, but cybersecurity experts believe these kinds of prompt manipulation attacks will continue to appear in all major AI tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and others. It is a reminder that technology is smart, attackers are smarter, but informed users are always the smartest of all.
